Afghan War News > Security > ANA > Tank Battalion

The Afghan National Army (ANA) has just one tank battalion. It is equipped with Soviet style T-55 and T-62 tanks. The 3rd Kandak, 2nd Brigade, 111th Capital Division is used primarily as an infantry kandak providing security for Kabul. Many of the tanks of the ANA have been cannibalized or sold off as scrap metal. The tank battalion lacks a comprehensive maintenance program for its old tanks and it is unlikely that any tank modernization will take place in the near future.

The usefullness of tanks in a counterinsurgency is limited. Afghanistan has been provided with lightly-armored vehicles that move quickly and are far better suited for the terrain of most of Afghanistan. The mountain roads of the country tend to channelize tank movement although the tanks could operate effectively in the southwest of Afghanistan where the terrain is less mountainous.
