The new United States military mission in Afghanistan beginning in 2015
will be known as Operation Freedom's Sentinel (OFS). It will be part of the
NATO-led Resolute Support Mission. Operation Freedom's Sentinel is the
follow-on mission to Operation Enduring Freedom. OFS is focused on
developing Afghan institutional capacity to enchance security and
stability across Afghanistan. The United States military forces in
Afghanistan are conducting " . . . two narrow, well-defined, and
complementary missions: training, advising and assisting the ANDSF and
supporting counterterrorism operations against remnants of al Qaeda and
its associates." 1.
