Nangarhar ProvinceProvinces > Nangarhar Nangarhar province is located in the east of Afghanistan along the Pakistan border. It is the location of one of Afghanistan's most important border crossings into Pakistan. It's eastern and southern districts are the generally contested by the Taliban and more recently the Islamic State of Khorasan Province (ISKP). A major airbase is located in Nangarhar province in Jalalalbad - the capital of the province. At one time a full brigade and many support units of the United States military was based there. In addition a U.S. Army Special Forces company had a Advanced Operations Base (AOB) from which it supervised 4-6 Special Forces operational detachments spread throughout the region. One of the most contested areas is Achin district - first controlled by the Taliban and then, in 2015, taken by ISKP.
