On August 26, 2021, during the Kabul non-combatant evacuation operation (NEO), and explosion took place at one of the gates of the Kabul airport where thousands of Afghans were attempting to gain entry to the airport for an evacuation flight out of Afghanistan. The ISIS-K attack by a lone suicide bomber killed 13 U.S. service members around 170 Afghans.

The attack by the islamic State of Iraq and Syria - Khorasan was not a complex attack. Initial reports indicated that the attack also employed gunfire and that there was a second explosion near the Baron Hotel. However, a subsequent investigation on Abbey Gate revealed there was only one explosion and no terrorist gunfire.

The deaths and injuries were caused by a single explosive device. The incident resulted in the death of 11 Marines, one soldier, and one sailor. Initial reports say that there was gunfire emp
