Resettlement of Afghan Evacuees

Resettlement of Afghan Evacuees in the United States.

Photo: A contractor speaks with an Afghan evacuee on the possible resettlement locations across the United States at Aman Omid Village in Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., Oct. 23, 2021. The Defense Department through Northern Command, and in support of the Department of State and Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities. Provided below is information about the resettlement of Afghan evacuees in the United States.

Sponsor Circle. A special program set up by the Department of State to assist Afghan evacuees in the resettlement process. Sponsor Circle Program.

Voluntary Departure. Some Afghans are choosing for an 'early departure' from the evacuee centers established by the Department of Defense. There are many factors an Afghan should consider when deciding on a 'Voluntary Departure'. Most important is the loss of resettlement assistance. The Nichols Liu agency describes the activities at the temporary DoD camps and provides some advice to those Afghans considering leaving one of the camps before completing the resettlement process. Learn more in "Afghan Refugee Centers - A Note for Families and Friends of Refugees", Nichols Liu, October 5, 2021.

How Resettlement Works

There are nine organizations certified as resettlement agencies. Each volunteer agency has affiliates across the United States - for a total of about 350 affiliates.
